Mission Statement Liberty Family Outreach was designed to sponsor and support Christian outreach programs. Since 1994, we have been helping to meet the social, material, emotional, and spiritual needs of families in southeast Michigan. We have grown from a small group of people with nothing but a dream to touching hundreds of lives in a positive way. In less than 12 years we have gone from meeting in a rented school facility to a 12,000 square foot building on 3 acres. And we are outgrowing that building at a rapid pace. Although we have dozens of programs to meet specific needs in our community, our primary focus is in three areas of outreach.
History & Program Descriptions
Uturn is a proven program designed to promote positive values to adolescents who are surrounded with negative pressures. Through events, support groups, teaching, mentoring, counseling, and camps, teens are encouraged to stand for values that will cause them to lead productive lives as adults. These meetings give kids an open forum to speak candidly about their struggles and offer them ways to deal with the stress and pressures they face daily. Weekly "main events" are held at our Uturn Center where kids can play games and meet with friends in a non-threatening environment. Each main event includes an inspirational message, opportunities to get involved in our music or drama team as well as time to talk with an adult counselor about any problems they may face. Uturn also sponsors monthly recreational events as well as annual camps and retreats. Hundreds of kids have been touched through the Uturn program. Our vision is to expand this program to reach thousands throughout our community.
Liberty Park is a consistently growing program that touches the lives of elementary and pre-school kids. Each week, kids are taught powerful lessons designed to lay a foundation in their lives that will prepare them for the pressures of adolescence and adulthood. Creativity abounds as children are mentored through music, skits, videos, crafts, puppets, and games. Monthly themes teach kids values such as courage, patience, and self-control. Liberty Park hosts an annual camp and a weeklong conference that has changed hundreds of young lives. Kids can also get involved in the arts through singing and drama. Older kids are taught how to be leaders and mentor their younger peers. Annual events such as Easter egg hunts, picnics, and parties provide quality, family time for kids and parents to have fun together.
Liberty Park includes our Royal Rangers and Missionettes programs which are achievement-based, scouting programs that teach elementary school kids skills that prepare them for adulthood. Kids earn badges that develop their self-esteem as they are honored for their achievements in public ceremonies. This program is rapidly growing and has been an excellent outreach to kids in the community. It is designed for older people to teach younger people generational values that get lost if they are not passed down.
Boys are taught love of family, love of others and love of nature through father-son retreats, ice fishing outings, and field trips to museums and nature centers. An advanced awards-based program strengthens boys mentally and spiritually. Further, the boys increase their physical abilities by participation in age-specific activities and recreation. Finally, they are introduced to community, and nature-related activities to develop their social skills and awareness. Dedicated leaders, called commanders, provide boys a role model and necessary direction during a weekly outpost meeting. Kids love learning how to pack a backpack, put up a tent, tie a rope, bait a hook, or conserve and recycle our natural resources.
Our weekly Missionettes program is designed to encourage girls through love and acceptance. The program develops self-esteem by providing a positive environment for girls to develop their gifts and abilities. Missionette clubs mentor elementary age girls in the skills they need to succeed as a young lady. Girls make their way through achievement programs as they complete units in The World Around You (goals), The World About You (activities), and The World Within You (character development). Through stories, crafts, sleepovers, and weekly meetings, older women provide teaching, accountability and a role model that develops values that are important for each generation to experience.
Although reaching kids is our primary focus, we realize that if their home environment is filled with strife and pressure, much of what we accomplish will be quickly undone. Therefore we provide programs, financial assistance, food, clothing, teaching, and family counseling to meet the financial, social, and spiritual needs of parents and families. Since our world is filled with poverty, divorce, and domestic violence, we believe many of our childrens' greatest struggles begin at home. To this end, we provide weekly meetings as well as annual events and retreats that teach men and women how to handle stress, addictions, anger, and finances as they work toward a healthy home and marriage.
The most obvious cause of the deterioration of our society has been the deterioration of the family. Strong families make strong communities. Strong communities make the world a wonderful place to live. Our future is in the hands of our children. We believe that if we can reach our children, we can change the future of our world.
